"The Shooter"

      ~ Author
Dave Sullivan

I walked in the hall, heard the clicking of balls,
There were photos and posters all over the walls,
Under my arm was a dark padded case,
I felt the excitement that came from this place,

I thought of the the time when I first played "the game",
From that moment on, I was never the same,
Obsessed with a habit I never would kick,
poking at balls with a long wooden stick,

I had a good feeling, I knew I'd shoot well,
I approached the "house table" where the regulars dwell,
I challenged their best to a game of nine ball,
He tossed me a quarter, I flipped and he called,

My shooting was rusty the first couple games,
missing some straight shots and cursing up flames,
"I hate this damn game" I explained to my beer,
as I sat on my stool, watched the table get cleared,

Another game lost and I racked 'em up tight,
My opponent then broke using all of his might,
the cue ball went rolling across the hall floor,
I had ball in hand, I could ask for no more,

I gathered my thoughts and began very slow,
A smooth steady stroke, I was aiming down low,
One after one, I attacked every ball,
Hitting precisely with great speed control,

The eight in the corner sent the cue for a ride,
It rolled to a stop for the nine in the side,
That's when I started to shoot like a pro,
Inside, I could feel my confidence grow,

A few hours later... a fortune at stake,
I just tied the match, it was my turn to break,
My stomach felt queasy for one simple fact...
All I had won was at stake with this rack,

I powered the break and I sunk all but six,
But then I was left in a terrible fix,
The two in the side, will it go...will it not,
Should I go for the safe, should I go for the shot,

I went for the shot and it just missed the side,
I kept my composure, though inside I had died,
I missed a tough shot, but I just remained cool,
I've learned that this is the key to good pool,

My opponent ran three, then missed at the five,
I reached for my cue, I was very alive,
the five in the corner, the eight down the rail,
Tough cut on the nine...I felt a bit pale,

As sharp as a razor, the nine slowly dropped,
My thundering heartbeat had finally stopped,
My rival was putting his cue in it's case,
Then tossed me my prize with disgust on his face,

I left that pool hall feeling just above great,
Enjoying my love for the game that I hate,
I understood then why I lived by the rule,
That "nothing compares to a good game of pool".
